Job Description:

Deputy Engineers on Cape Class vessels undertake marine engineering activities on board under limited supervision, under operational command principles and in accordance with their level of AMSA Certification and assigned Technical Authority. They undertake moderately complex activities to assist the Chief Engineering Officer. They make engineering decisions within their technical authority and may assume responsibility for the efficient operation of the vessel’s machinery in the absence of more senior engineering officers.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Operate the Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for scheduling and recording planned corrective maintenance; monitor its effectiveness for the vessel, and if necessary, propose amendments for its use
  • Participate in capability restoration risk assessments regarding engineering machinery systems and their impact on a mission. For example, reverse osmosis system for drinking water supply
  • Conduct and oversee planned onboard maintenance in accordance with skill level, operational requirements and logistical availability
  • Assist with sailing checks to ensure asset availability to meet mission requirements.

Job Requirements:

  • Certificate of Proficiency of Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats as approved by AMSA
  • Ability to gain and maintain a Restricted Electrical license
  • Ability to gain and maintain Working at Heights Certification
  • Ability to gain and maintain Enclosed Space Entry Certification
  • Undertake and pass psychometric testing
  • Undertake and successfully complete the Operational Readiness Assessment which includes the Basic Fitness Assessment and the ABF Medical Assessment
  • Successfully complete Marine Induction Training
  • Advanced Fire Fighting training as approved by AMSA
  • Breathing Apparatus
  • Certificate of Medical Fitness for sea duty in accordance with Marine Orders Part 76 (Health Medical Fitness)
  • Must be able to swim and tread water
  • Successfully complete and maintain an Advanced First Aid Certificate (HLTAID014) and Advanced Resuscitation (HLTAID15)
  • Ability to obtain an Official Passport
  • Ability to complete all ABF officer training modules
  • Swear an oath or make an affirmation
  • Actively participate in career management (postings and deployments)
  • Be uniformed.
