Job Description:

The Claims Team is responsible for overseeing the management of claims made against the Commonwealth under the Comcover Statement of Cover, which outlines the terms and conditions under which a wide range of insurable losses are covered including liability and property matters. A key area of work is the management of significant claims (as defined under the Commonwealth Legal Services Directions 2017) which are high-profile litigation matters which may involve sensitive legal, political or policy issues.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Have, or be able to develop, data literacy skills in order to research and analyse claims data and related information for trends analysis, policy review and educational purposes
  • Produce clear and concise reports and briefs, including ministerial submissions
  • Contribute to the management of the team’s work program, prioritise competing tasks and take initiative to ensure the timely and accurate management and settlement of claims including property and/or liability matters
  • Support team members in all aspects of the claims management process, including the preparation of decision-making support documents and the appropriate application of alternative dispute resolution practices
  • Develop and maintain stakeholder relationships with a range of external stakeholders, including Fund Members, legal firms and contracted claims management service providers
  • Think strategically to identify risks, linkages, precedents and lessons and consider claims from a whole-of-government perspective;
  • Contribute to the implementation and oversight of complex contracts with external service providers
  • Contribute to the work of the Branch and Division to support the achievement of Comcover’s overall business objectives and shared outcomes across the Division.

Job Requirements:

  • Candidates with formal legal qualifications and/or extensive experience in complex claims management will be highly regarded.
  • Candidates with knowledge of administrative law practice and/or with insurance industry experience will also be highly regarded.
