Job Description:

The Mail Policy and Reform Section develops policy and controls to manage biosecurity risk associated with international mail and implements reforms to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of regulating the mail pathway. The section works collaboratively with Australia Post and partner border agencies.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Leading and managing the Mail Policy and Reform Section to ensure productivity and outcomes are achieved
  • Effectively engaging with managers, peers, and stakeholders including fostering a collaborative and productive work culture and working with multiple changing deadlines
  • Establishing and supporting constructive and collaborative relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Representing the department in negotiations and discussions with external stakeholders, including Australia Post, border agencies and other government departments (both within Australia and with international counterparts)
  • Contributing to Cabinet submissions
  • Setting the strategic direction and forward work program of the Mail Policy and Reform Section and contributing to strategic direction of Biosecurity Operations Division and the department
  • Working effectively across the department and whole-of-government initiatives to deliver improved, nationally consistent biosecurity policy for the mail pathway and supporting the operational pathway
  • Managing mail pathway policy and decision support material and associated reforms
  • Supporting internal and external committees and working groups
  • Developing products of a high standard that include timely and considered advice such as briefings, papers, and reports.

Job Requirements:

  • Knowledge and understanding of the Biosecurity Act 2015 .
  • Extensive experience building and maintaining effective working relationships with a range of government and non-government stakeholders
  • Experience in the development, implementation and management of policy and programs
  • Experience in working under pressure and the ability to work to critical deadlines, take initiative and exercise sound judgment.
