Job Description:

As the Team Leader in Avian Infectious Disease Research at the Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP), you will undertake specific research relating to avian animals, and support the team’s innovative research aligned with CSIRO’s strategies. Adapting to the changing needs of the group, you will interact closely with government and industry stakeholders and provide effective people and project leadership. In this key role, you will make a significant contribution to R&D and diagnostic testing activities within the ACDP Diagnostics, Surveillance and Response Program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead experimental research delivery and ensure Avian Infectious Disease research and diagnostic capabilities are maintained.
  • Work with direct line management responsibilities to the Diagnostics and Avian Disease Research Group Leader for meeting CSIRO and AAHL policy, procedures and reporting related to this position.
  • Lead, plan and coordinate a diverse range of research activities.
  • Develop Avian Infectious Disease research capability team objectives that are aligned with the broader group and DSR program performance goals.
  • Collaborate to publish results of investigations and service activities.
  • Contribute to the maintenance of laboratory practices and standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge on avian infectious diseases of major concern to Australian wildlife and livestock industries, and on novel and emerging technologies.
  • Effectively communicate scientific and diagnostics results.

Job Requirements:

  • Scientific knowledge, experience and achievement in managing multidisciplinary research projects.
  • Recognised managerial leadership skills, including an ability to supervise staff and students, work collaboratively with team members, other team leaders and line management.
  • A PhD (or an equivalent combination of qualifications and research experience) in a relevant field such as virology, molecular biology, biotechnology or similar.
  • Theoretical and practical expertise in a wide range of relevant classical and modern techniques and technologies applicable to the study of infectious diseases.
  • The ability and willingness to contribute ideas and new approaches to meet experimental needs.
  • Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Research productivity, including successful grant applications and/or industry engagement, publications and research presentations.
