Job Description:

This Under the direction of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) Coordinator and the Human Resources (HR) Manager, the WHS Officer supports the functions of the WHS Management plan and assists with ensuring that Central Land Council employees and other stakeholders are operating within a safe, WHS-compliant environment.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare regular and ad-hoc safety reports identifying trends, key issues, contemporary research and practices, risks and recommended controls.
  • Conducting drug and alcohol testing as per organizational policy and procedure.
  • Maintain relevant registers including incident register, hazard register and COVID risk assessment registers.
  • Supporting all CLC sites in complying with COVID safety plan and CHO Directions.
  • Assist in the development and review of CLC WHS policies, procedures and SWMS.
  • Perform short and long-term projects as identified in the WHS Plan, including development, review, benchmarking and adaptation of current systems.
  • Undertake workplace inspections for improving WHS compliance by addressing hazards,
  • improving emergency preparedness, inspecting firefighting equipment and evacuation drawings, testing and tagging, replenishing first aid kits and PPEs.
  • Support in conducting toolbox talks and maintain records in eDIS.
  • Assist with the management of worker compensation claims and return to work plans.
  • Assist in the conduct of investigations into incidents, near misses and unsafe practices within the
  • workplace.

Job Requirements:

  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Appropriate level of health and fitness to meet the rigours of remote fieldwork including driving long distances in a 4WD vehicle, changing tyres and lifting up to 20kg as necessary.
  • Certificate III in Work Health and Safety (BSB30719) or commitment to complete one.
  • Ability to travel and work frequently in CLC remote locations / communities (50% of the time) for conducting workplace inspections, consulting employees on WHS issues and ensuring compliance with COVID safety plan.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills with an ability to communicate effectively with people, particularly Aboriginal people.
  • A current NT driver’s licence and the ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicles safely in remote
    localities.
