Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Manager, the Learning Adviser works as part of a specialist team of five learning advisers and two Digital Literacy Trainers who work in collaboration with academic staff within and alongside the curriculum to support students’ high-level academic learning development. This position requires expertise in academic and higher education pedagogy, an understanding of the higher education context and experience in working with students from diverse backgrounds. The Learning Adviser’s work includes the design, delivery and evaluation of general and ANU discipline-specific teaching that is informed by best practice. This includes providing group teaching, tutorials, 1-1 consults and the creation of written and multimodal online resources to students that offer specific advice and strategies to assist them with their studies. The Learning Adviser is also involved in leading and collaborating in various projects within and beyond SIS.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Advise individual students from all disciplines, including those from diverse backgrounds and at different stages of their educational lifecycle, and assist them to gain strategies and skills that enable them to become independent learners.
  • Design, develop and evaluate teaching for individual tutorials, workshops, published and online resources, which meet and are responsive to the diverse learning needs of students.
  • Deliver group teaching in a range of contexts, both independently and collaboratively, with other academic and professional staff using a variety of approaches and strategies.
  • Develop and build relationships with academic and professional staff on issues related to students’ academic development and work collaboratively to contribute to a range of workshops and initiatives.
  • Undertake other duties consistent with and relevant to the classification of the position.

Job Requirements:

  • Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral, including the ability to create and build strong relationships with faculty members and other key stakeholders.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification, with progress towards postgraduate qualifications and extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education/training.
  • Proven ability to lead and work collaboratively in a team environment, as well as independently.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, design, develop and evaluate high quality, best practice teaching and learning resources.
  • Sound organisational and time management skills, including information technology literacy and the ability to set priorities, problem-solve, manage projects and perform well during high-pressure peak periods
